30 in 30 Dec 5, 2020

In my first blog post about Ghost, I showed you how you can use an affordable $5/month hosting plan offered by Digital Ocean to install Ghost blogging software.

An alternative to your own Digital Ocean hosting would have been choosing Ghost own plans which starts at $29/month

Now, this blog post assumes you already got Ghost either you host it yourself under Digital Ocean like we have shown here, or you used Ghost hosting. In this post, I am going to share with you how you can customize your blog. Those who are blogging for the first time will find this useful. As simple as Ghost interface is, there are a few options that might not be as intuitive.

So I will start at the very beginning, this is right after Ghost has been installed.

After Ghost has been successfully installed you will see a default Casper theme that looks like this when you put your domain name (e.g. on your browser:

So, to get into Ghost dashboard and register your account this is what you have to do.

Step 0: Get into Ghost Dashboard and Register

The way to get into the dashboard is by typing the following on your browser address bar: yourblogname/ghost (e.g.

This is how you login into Ghost

Always you will do this when you want to login into your blog and write new blog posts or do anything with your blog. Essentially, it's how you get to your Ghost account or dashboard.

Step 1: Ghost Setup Page

The above page will appear immediately after you enter: yourblogname/ghost (e.g. on your browser.

Click where it says "Create your account", then you will be directed to the following page:

Put the information of your Site Title, this will be the name of your site - it can easily be changed later.

Then put your Full Name and Email Address.

Create your password (at least 10 characters) and make sure you write it somewhere else so you don't forget. Ghost won't send you the password.

After that, click where it says "Last step: Invite staff users" and you will be directed to this page:

This is an optional step, in case you will have other people contributing to your blog you can add their email addresses here. After adding their email addresses click "Invite some users". If not, you can click at the very bottom where it says "I'll do this later, take me to my site"

The setup process has been done and now you will enter in Ghost dashboard:

Step 2: Ghost Dashboard (View Site)

I will try to go over each section on your dashboard. From the very top, you see "View site", this is where you will be going to visit or view your site on your browser. There are two ways to do this, one is either clicking the word "View site" which upon clicking you will see your website on the right-hand side. The other way is by clicking the arrow that appears when you hover over those words "View site". The arrow is right beside the blue glowing dot. If you click that arrow your website will open on a new browser tab. See below:
